The Arecomic Volcs, a Celtic tribe, occupied for several centuries the plain of Vaunage before our era and the Roman conquest. They established their fortified habitat on the heights near a perennial source: an oppidum. There are six around the Vaunage which, for reasons that are still obscure, were not inhabited at the same time. On the hill above Nages, they occupied the site of Roque de Viou, in the town of Saint-dionisy, and abandoned it around -280, -270 to settle a few hundred meters from the town of Nages, on the Castels area. The establishment took place between -290 and -250. The gap is due to the time it took to make the walls. The buildings made of entirely drystone, consist of defensive walls & towers and very egalitarian dwellings arranged along the streets according to a plan of urbanism unique in Gaul at that time. You had to get down to the water source. A single construction of the oppidum of the Castels, the Fanum was neither a dwelling nor a defensive work: it is attributed as a religious character. This site was abandoned around year 10 : as the Roman occupation brought peace, the inhabitants moved closer to the source. Subsequently there were beautiful Roman villas in Nages, important place on the Via Luteva connecting Nîmes to Lodève and close to the Via Domitia. The area was in peace until the threat of the next Germanic invasions. Paradoxically, the more recent story is less known because it has left fewer traces. Until the nineteenth century, the land’s resources were based on the exploitation of natural resources, mainly grains and olive trees, which the production provided local consumption. The population growth in the nineteenth century led to the exploitation of all the lands, plains, sinkholes and plateaux, while the poorest lands welcomed herds. After the first world war, the population decreases and then regains continuous growth from around 1970. During the decline, the trays and hillsides were abandoned, and then in the second half of the twentieth century, the plain was dedicated to the monoculture of the vine. The strong population change of recent years is of a different nature: it is due to the installation of new residents whose resources depend on jobs located outside the commune, therefore without direct link with the natural environment. At the same time, the number of farmers has decreased considerably.
