City Culture

Charming medieval village in the heart of the "garrigue", just a few kilometers from the Pic Saint-Loup, the gorges of Herault and Buèges, Saint-Martin-de-Londres is part of a rich and varied environment to combine cultural interest , love of nature, sports activities and pleasures of the table. Located about twenty kilometers from Montpellier, Saint-Martin-de-Londres is the image of typical Languedoc villages: it bears witness to both a medieval past strongly anchored in its identity, and the sweetness of life of places spared by mass tourism. In the heart of the old village, girdled in the intimacy of its ramparts, one strolls in the alleys lined with small houses with colored shutters and flowery balconies. We stroll under the beautiful arcades of stones admiring the work of the builders of the past. In the center, familiar, sits the square around the fountain, under the refreshing shade of its plane trees centenarians: place of sharing and meeting. Like many Languedoc villages strongly marked by an illustrious past, Saint Martin de Londres contains a treasure: The church connected to the priory, dating from the time of Charlemagne. Its harmonious proportions, the sobriety of its decorations, the unity of its style, characteristic of the 1st Romanesque Art, wrought iron, like the Gellone Abbey to which it strangely resembles, one of the most important architectural buildings,- one of the most beautiful of the Region. In the 15th century, during the 100 year war was erected a second wall,- it was later on destroyed. However, there is still today the Clock Tower, which, in the 18th century, served as a guardhouse and prison and, taken away, now marks the serene hours of the village.
