Eastern neighbor to Montpellier - Castelnau-le-lez is a green village.

Built on a site populated since the age of copper, Castelnau-le-Lez is more than 2.000 years old. During antiquity, it was a fortress dominating the Lez known as Sextantion or Suxtantione, sixth station on the Domician Way. In the Middle Ages, people gather at the foot of a "new castle" - Castellum Novum - to protect themselves from barbarian invasions. At that time, the stone replaces wood for all types of construction: bridges, castles, churches ... They take the name of "new bridge", "new castle", "lo castel nou" in Occitan.
